if you have a file on your system and want to know where it came from dpkg -S
usually helps. If the file is a generated file (created by a program or during
package install) no part of the system can help you.
If later on down the road you need to know what package to install for a
particular file there is a package 'auto-apt' which has a very nice search
capability.
