You might want to try adjusting your $LC_CTYPE to something with the
ISO-8859-1 character set. (I use LC_CTYPE=en_GB.ISO-8859-1, for
example.) On woody/sid, you'll also need to generate any extra locales
you use with 'dpkg-reconfigure locales'.
