infinity loop when booting

hello list,

recently I installed woody from cds on my machine (i386, qwertz-kbd, bios-clock on GMT from previous linux (suse6.4) installations).

All went on quite smoothly, until after configuring the root password and a default user. after displaying the message 'loading /etc/console/boottime.kmap.gz' thee system ran into an infinity loop of setting timezone and whether one wishes to have md5 passwords and a shadow file.

Except for that the systems seems to be running ok (i.e. I'm able to switch to another console and log in either as root either as user).

Any helping hint would be greatly appreciated
thanks
	tilman
