In your .profile, .bashrc, or .zshenv file, depending on which shell
you use.  Infidels might also consider .cshrc.  :-)

(I have a separate dotfile, .variables, which sets this sort of thing,
and I source it from .xsession and .zlogin.  YMMV.)
