What version of xmms? potato, woody, sid? Why did 'apt-get install xmms'
not work?

vineet@pianoman ~ % apt-cache policy xmms
xmms:
  Installed: (none)
  Candidate: 1.2.7-1
  Version Table:
     1.2.7-1 0
        800 http://linux.CSUA.Berkeley.EDU woody/main Packages
        600 http://linux.CSUA.Berkeley.EDU sid/main Packages
     1.0.1-2 0
        700 http://linux.CSUA.Berkeley.EDU potato/main Packages

Both of those just say Depends libglib1.2 (>= 1.2.0)

vineet@pianoman ~ % apt-cache policy libglib1.2
libglib1.2:
  Installed: 1.2.10-4
  Candidate: 1.2.10-4
  Version Table:
 *** 1.2.10-4 0
        800 http://linux.CSUA.Berkeley.EDU woody/main Packages
        600 http://linux.CSUA.Berkeley.EDU sid/main Packages
        100 /var/lib/dpkg/status
     1.2.7-2 0
        700 http://linux.CSUA.Berkeley.EDU potato/main Packages

Either of those should satisfy the dependency. Why doesn't 'apt-get
install xmms' work for you?

good times,
Vineet
