RE: what to install to get ldconfig..?

it's really unusual to not have ldconfig on debian, it comes with libc6
location of ldconfig is not in your path
do this
export PATH=$PATH:/sbin
dpkg -i whatever.deb

(#:/work) dpkg -i libc6_2.1.3-20.deb
dpkg: `ldconfig' not found on PATH.
dpkg: 1 expected program(s) not found on PATH.
NB: root's PATH should usually contain /usr/local/sbin, /usr/sbin and /sbin.

(#:/work) locate ldconfig
....doesn't find it.

So, what do i have to install to get ldconfig..
Sorry for being such a newbie.
