Error: Kernel panic: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on 03:03 AND the fix

    Greetings:

This post is for archives and google searches. No help required.

On booting new compiled 2.4.18 kernel, I incurred a kernel panic:
VFS: Cannot open root device "" or 03:03
     Please append a correct "root=" boot option
     Kernel panic: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on 03:03

Before you start to tweak a lilo.conf file, do make sure you *include*
ATA-ATAPI disk support in the kernel config prior to compiling! :)_

Main menu:  ATA/IDE/MFM/RLL support  --->
Then: IDE, ATA and ATAPI Block devices --->
<*>   Include IDE/ATA-2 DISK support

It is painfully easy to build kernels for your *own* box, but other
peoples boxen might just use IDE, and require the driver support. :)
