when you installed the new kernel it should have made a /vmlinuz.old symlink
which will point to your last kernel. If you reboot and hit the control key at
the LILO: promp you can then boot this old kernel. Once you have rebooted
under the old kernel you can do dpkg --purge kernel.... and make a new one.
