It depends on how the bytes are handled.  If your MUA/pager converts
the charset in some way to your charset, everything should become a
printable character, even if the resultant text makes no sense.  If it
just dumps it at your terminal, then it depends on what bytes in that
charset correlate to control characters in your charset, and what
those control characters do to your terminal.

I often find, in gnome-terminal, that odd CP1252 and the like
characters cause the rest of the line to act funny.  If I use vim as
the pager I can move the cursor over each character on the line and
view it properly, then it goes wacky when I scroll down a line.  The
same thing happens running the 'sensors' program when it prints a
degree symbol.  My LANG is set to UTF-8, and gnome-terminal can't
really handle that (yet).
