Yep, Linux was a clear knockout for me when I replaced my Diamond 550
card with a Matrox G450 card. I took my box down, installed the card,
edited my X config file (to change nv to mga) and was back in
business. Total time from researching the card, to finding the best
price and ordering it, to installation and configuration: less than 1 hour.
I didn't bother to research whether it would work on Windows, and only
found out when I went to play some games a week later that this card
doesn't work on Win98 (SE) on my Tyan motherboard with VIA chipset.
I spent many, many hours over the course of a week installing drivers,
updating drivers, reflashing the bios, re-installing Win98, piddling
around with various BIOS and PnP settings, and rebooting, rebooting,
rebooting, and I still don't have a working Win98 box, unless you
consider 8-bit 640x480 on a 21" monitor "working".
