X server crash: could not open default font "fixed"

I am new to debian.
When i try to start x it crashes giving me the message
"could not open default font 'fixed'".

I have checked the FontPath and font directories for
fonts.dir and everything appears to be ok after
reading the Fonts-HOWTO. 

Is there an obvious solution to this problem?
