Can't resolve DNS after potato to woody upgrade

I tried an upgrade from potato 2.2r3 to woody and all seemed to go
well except that after connecting to my ISP with ppp via phone dialup
I can't resolve any names. This use to work fine under potato. I can
ping the numerical addresses fine, but for example a ping to
debian.org fails. I did a route -n with the following result:

Destination Gateway Genmask Flags Metric Ref Use Iface
192.168.0.2 0.0.0.0 255... UH 1 0 0 tap0
206.53.160.232 0... 255... UH 0 0 0 ppp0
192.168.0.0 0... 255...0 U 0 0 0 tap0
0.0.0.0 0... 0... U 1 0 0 tap0

where the ... means more of same. I suspect it is trying to resolve
the names locally whereas I want it to look at the dynamically
provided nameserver of the ISP. I'm also not sure what the tap0
interface is. To send this message I rebooted to a working copy of
potato on another partition. I'm still running 2.2.19 kernel. I have
an ethernet card but haven't (and don't need to at the moment)
configured it or even loaded the driver. Can ayone help me sort out
the DNS problem? Thanks...
