There's a potential problem with that, if you used the x-window-system
task to install X:

polonius:/home/peter# dpkg --remove xdm
dpkg: dependency problems prevent removal of xdm:
 x-window-system depends on xdm.
dpkg: error processing xdm (--remove):
 dependency problems - not removing
Errors were encountered while processing:
 xdm
