You need the -dev package.

I know next to nothing about postfix and maildrop, but i have courier
runnung with multiple domains and virtual users in combination with
exim.

Exim delivers directly to the maildirs, both exim and courier get
their account infos from ldap. 

User log in with their full email (user@doma.in).

The same schould be doable with userdb....
