First, install Woody with ordinary ext2 partitions.

Then upgrade to a recent 2.4 kernel (2.4.17 is probably best at the
moment; I've had problems with 2.4.18, particularly its USB support).
You will probably have to build your own kernel to have ext3fs support;
I doubt it's included in the standard kernel-image packages.

Then, running your new ext3-enabled kernel, use tune2fs with the -j
option to convert each of your ext2 partitions to ext3. It is not
necessary to unmount the partitions beforehand, though of course you
will have to unmount/remount them afterwards to get the system to
understand that they're now ext3. (A reboot will do the job nicely.)

If you use an initrd, make sure that it contains the ext3 module, or
that your new kernel has ext3 built-in. (I always build it into the
kernel -- it's needed for all my filesystems, so when would I not have
it loaded?) Otherwise your root filesystem will be mounted as ext2,
since the ext3 code won't be available when the root is mounted.
