xinetd and identd -- new stuff in syslog

After a recent woody upgrade I've been noticing some logging by xinetd
and identd. The entries are, for example :

Feb 21 23:34:20 dman xinetd[27628]: warning: can't get client address: Transport endpoint is not connected
Feb 21 23:34:21 dman identd[27628]: started
Feb 21 23:34:28 dman spamd[313]: connection from dman.ddts.net [ 127.0.0.1 ] at port 32929
Feb 21 23:34:34 dman spamd[27672]: clean message for dman:1000 in 6 seconds.

I ask because of the warning from identd. I do find it interesting
that spamd gets a connection immediately after the xinetd and identd
logs every time. What is the cause and meaning of the xinetd and
identd messages?
