Okay, link lights are good.  Try this to narrow the problem area
down:
- ping each hosts local interface to make sure it's reachable
- if each host can ping it's own interface and you still can't
  ping across to the other host:
  - run something like ipgrab on on interface while the other
    host pings it
  - if you see the echo requests coming across, and you see the
    echo replies going out, then you still have a cable issue
  - if you don't see the echo requests coming across, you still
    have a cable issue
- else you need to make sure the local interface is functioning
  properly, although I believe you've already done that

I personally haven't had much luck with custom built cables, as
well as cables made by certain manufactures.

You may also try setting the default gw on each host to its own
local interface.
