Mouse stops in xfree86 4.1.0

I ran Debian stable and xfree86 3.3.6 successfully for
several weeks, but wished for KDE so am trying to
upgrade to Debain testing.

I have a serious problem that I think is with xfree86
4.1.0. I boot into x-windows, KDE or gnome and can
only use the mouse for about 1 minute before it stops.
The mouse locks up as I move across window or applet
boundaries. Some of the time I can hit the enter key
or alt-tab and the mouse breaks free and works again
for another minute. The mouse works correctly in shell
consoles under gpm.

The mouse is a serial genius netmouse that has worked
well with xfree86 3.3.6 for two years.

I tried XFree86 - configure but this gave me an
x-windows session where the mouse did not work at all.
I have hand configured the mouse with xf86config as
/dev/ttyS0, ms protocal and emulating three buttons
but this gives a mouse that only works for several
motions across window/applet boundaries. This mouse
setup worked well with xfree86 3.3.6.

I have tried this now with two different video cards
(graphics blaster exxtreme and diamond stealth
2000)but there was no difference - both video cards
worked with x-windows but the mouse driver is very
bad.

My kernal is 2.2.19 from Debian stable - or did it
change to 2.2.20 with the upgrade to testing? I am not
sure. My processor is an AMD K6-450. Would an upgrade
to kernal 2.4.16-k6 fix this bug?

I have reloaded Debian stable and reupgraded to
testing but still have a tired mouse.

Has anyone seen this before - it seems to me to be a
very serious bug in xfree86 4.1.0. Should I upgrade to
xfree86 4.2.0 from xfree86.org? If I were to upgrade
to Debian unstable would I get a different version of
xfree86?

Thanks,
Dennis Krinke
