PCnet32 nic with 2.4.16 kernel

Hi,

I just compiled the debian kernel-source 2.4.16 on woody (alpha station).
I included the driver for my second nic, a pcnet32, in the kernel, so not
a module. In my messages i find that it is being recognized and has got
IRQ 44.
The problem is that i can't get it working, not with linuxconfig, not with
ifconfig... editing /etc/network/interfaces doesn't help either.

with ifconfig I get :

#ifconfig eth1 192.168.0.1
SIOCSIFFLAGS: Invalid argument

any clues?

thx,

pieter
