Here is a more complete howto by another poster.
Kernel 2.5.x is the development series and not
recommended for new users. The latest stable kernels
are the 2.4 series. You don't mention what
distribution of debian you are using so it's hard to
tell what the latest debian kernel package for you
is....You can check available packages for your
distribution at:
