I had a similar problem ... maybe you need to make Windows 2000 send
unecrypted passwords?
AFAIK, Windows 2000 will only work with Samba using plain text passwords ...
at least, that's how I made it work.

will tell you how to enable plain text passwords on Windows 2000.
