Do you have the old /etc/vimrc hanging around?  If so, at the very
least comment out the section on autocommands for gzip files.  With
vim 5 the vimrc did lots of automatic running around to uncompress the
file, view/edit it, and then compress it again.  Vim 6 does this
automatically.
