? Isn't that the default way mutt works?  Its so long since I set it up
from scratch I forget.

set timeout=60          # Check for new mail every minute

If you add this to .muttrc it should check all the mailboxes every
minute and you'll see a "New mail in fsf-i" message at the bottom of the
screen when you are in debian-user.

Alternatively, press c from time to time.  It'll pop up the name of a
mailbox with new mail or else ask you to browse by pressing ?
