3c509 and 2.2r2 installation

I'm having a little trouble doing an NFS install on a machine with a
3com 3c509 card ( 3 ports ) for Debian 2.2r2.

I start the installation and after a while reach the stage where I
need to load the module for this card: this I do and the module
installation proceeds with no erros. ( I use the default settings of
io=0 and irq=0 to probe the card. ) I then configure the
network. However, although the settings reported by ifconfig eth0 are
correct ( they are the same irq and io that do work with OpenBSD and
NetBSD on the same machine ) nothing happens on the half-installed
Debian: pinging other machines on the network fails to illicit any response.

cat /proc/ioports gives the correct values, but cat /proc/interrupts
shows 0 against the card/irq.

lsmod shews the 3c509 module to be installed.

Help ! I'm at a loss as to what the problem is, and I don't know what
to do about it. Thanks for any help ...
