That's not what mine says:

brw-rw---- 1 root cdrom 11, 0 Nov 22 2000 /dev/scd0

The 'c' at the beginning of your ls means 'character device'.  The 'b' on
mine means 'block device'.  So your error messages are correct.

Try: rm /dev/scd0 && mknod /dev/scd0 b 11 0

Optionally, chgrp cdrom /dev/scd0
