Base debian install is something around 60meg. Add a few utils to
compile your own kernel and have reasonable use out of it in console
mode for things such as web browsing, ircing, ftping, etc and you'll
prolly hit around 75meg +/1 5.

Dunno if sloppier would be the whole factor. There is also the thing
that software has to do more now-a-days but still, the whole 'snogload
of cpu/ram/hd space' factor does tend to cause problems I believe.
