My previous queries Re : Socket programming

Dear members,
I had written to the list weeks back on socket programming on Linux , and I had
sent across ,
my TCPEchoserv.c and the TCPEchoclient.c

Naren said that it worked for him , that makes me
all the more desperate.
I removed firewalls from my box , just in case
that prevents sockets from communicating .
(rpm -e ipchains).

But , neither at the server (10.10.1.4) nor
at the client (10.10.1.15)
does the client-server work , even on loopback
(starting the server as ./a.out on one VT --&--
starting the client as ./a.out 127.0.0.1 on another VT)
The situation remains the same even after removing ipchains ,
and at any case , ftp ,ssh , rsh , rlogin , telnet , ping , etc work pretty fine .

My next questions are :
1) What tools (rpm-s) have to be installed on your box
so that socket programming does work ?
2) Obviuosly everything else is in order , and firewalls
(ipchains) do not cause the problem (because , even
after removing them , the imbroglio persists )
and lastly (if I can use that word) , because it works
with minimal changes for Naren , the program is mostly
in order.
So , something else is amiss.
Please guide me on this .

Should I sent in the routing tables of the two machines ?
Well anyway , the tables of both the machines look
totally different , and I think , the problem lies elsewhere.

My 3rd question :
3) Does a Linux box have to be configured to take a hub/switch ?
If yes , how ?
We have not done any such configuration , since the switch was installed .
But , the question persists ... How can ftp ,ssh , rsh , rlogin , telnet , ping ,
etc work , in the absence of the 2 Linux boxes , being configured , to deal
with the switch ?

Please guide me on this ,

Warm Regards,
(shyamk@eth.net)
Shyam
