I just got mine working - but with devfsd. I DONT see the need for any alsa
modules.

The kernel (I'm using 2.4.16) has emu10k1 built as a module. In
/etc/modutils I have a file called akcmods. In it I have a line

alias /dev/sound emu10k1

(now you will need something different here - I guess like
alias char-major-14 emu10k1 - the reason I have /dev/sound is that the devfsd
daemon loads a module called the same name as the device name when a user
process tries to access any of the device nodes related to sound, if you
don't have devfsd then I think the char-major-14 will be what modprobe tries
to load when you call a device node with that characteristic - so check if
/dev/sound in your /dev directory is there with a device major value as 14)
