pin decides priority of archived packages against installed one.
hold just hold installed package.

APT respects hold, if "apt-get dselect-upgrade" is used.
PIN only works for woody APT.

DSELECT care hold.
DSELECT used with APT should care PIN.

"dpkg -i" does not care any, I think.

Correct me if I am wrong :-)  But this is what I understand.

Read "man apt_preferences" or APT HOWTO in "http://www.debian.org/doc/ddp";
