In what way did it mess up lilo?  Do you still have those kernel
images referenced, and lilo is telling you it isn't there?

I simply "dpkg -r kernel-image-<version>-<myversiondesignation>" and
it is fine.  I use grub, and I just have to remember to remove the
sections from my config to clean up the menu, otherwise the entries
are there but don't work.
