Great idea, excellent card.  I used to use a G450 until I moved to a G550
here last month and fed the G450 to my Windows machine.

You betcha.  Use the mga driver.

Nah.  You can use the open-source mga driver.  There's no real reason to
use the Matrox-provided one unless you really need HAL support for
something, like TV-out or the digital display.

# dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xfree86

And that should take care of your needs.
