New kernel boot problems

I've just "upgraded" a kernel on one of the laptops to 2.4.6. From what
I can see in the .config, everything is set correctly. make dep, make
bzImage, make modules and make_modules install all go without a hitch.
However, on boot-up, I get the following:

boot: new
Loading new............
Uncompressing Linxu... Ok, booting the kernel.

And then it sticks. Nothing. Nada. Any ideas where I should look for
problems? Thanks.
