trying to understand something

Running a woody box, I just went through an apt-get update, apt-get -u upgrade cycle and found that I could not restart X (failed to find default font fixed). I installed several font packages and the problem went away, but I'm not sure why.

Here's the relevant FontPath info from XF86Config:

       FontPath "/usr/lib/X11/fonts/misc:unscaled"
       FontPath "/usr/lib/X11/fonts/misc"
       FontPath "/usr/lib/X11/fonts/75dpi/:unscaled"
       FontPath "/usr/lib/X11/fonts/75dpi"
       FontPath "/usr/lib/X11/fonts/100dpi/:unscaled"
       FontPath "/usr/lib/X11/fonts/100dpi"
       FontPath "/usr/lib/X11/fonts/Type1"
       FontPath "/usr/lib/X11/fonts/Speedo"

... and the fonts I ended up installing:

 xfonts-artwiz
 xfonts-bitmap-mule
 xfonts-dosemu
 xfonts-jmk
 xfonts-marumoji
 xfonts-mona
 xfonts-x3270-misc

How do I tell which package fixed my problem? Or is something else going on?
