compiling a NIC driver

I am attempting to migrate another computer on my small family LAN to
Debian. The next box in line uses a Netgear FA311 NIC. This does not
seem to be supported by Potato. (Correct me if I'm wrong.)

I got the source for the driver from scyld.com, including very detailed
instructions. My problem is that the source requires "modversions.h"
which I do not have. Becker's instructions indicate that it should be
found at /usr/src/linux/include/linux/modversions.h. (And I have already
installed the symlink for the first occurance of "linux" in the above.)

I have downloaded the kernel source package from ftp.us.debian.org, and
it is not there. Is it something that is generated if I actually compile
the kernel? Where is it available?

Also, once I do get the driver compiled, how do I include it in the
installation? The screen message during installation mentions something
like " ... you may have been provided a floppy ..." and something about
directory structure for this driver disk, but not enough for me to
create a floppy in a format that I think might be correct.

So I look at the four drivers floppies that I used to install on my
first Debian box. They are unreadable on that box and on this RedHat 6.2
box on which I am writing the email. The error message indicates that
the file system can't be identified. Other floppies do work. (I did not
forget to include ide floppy support.) Do I need to understand this?
