Sourceforge's cvs system seems to set your shell account to a script, not bash. The script simply checks to see if your home directory is there. If not it creates it for you. Either way, it then boots you out. This means that you're set up like a regular user, but effectively have no access. You need to attempt to ssh into the machine in order to use cvs the first time, however.

No idea on how good / bad of an idea this is, but sourceforge seems to be using it.
