If 'dpkg-architecture -qDEB_BUILD_ARCH' doesn't show:
i386

then something's screwy, I would think.  Normally, the arch is "i386"
(not "linux"), and the gnu system type is "linux".

You can try the argument "--arch i386" with make-kpkg, but that
shouldn't be necessary.
