  On a related (?) topic

Ever since moving to Xfree 4.x I have been getting the following
  errors:

The XKEYBOARD keymap compiler (xkbcomp) reports:
  > Error: Cannot open "/var/tmp/server-1.xkm" to write
  > keyboard description

Couldn't load XKB keymap, falling back to pre-XKB keymap

Might some of the key mapping problems be caused by this?
ie. in xterm I have to use Ctrl Backspace to get backspace to work
as advertised. No big deal but I am curious.
