I'm quite sure it is in the 2.2 kernels.  Try using the 'idepci' boot
floppies.  Those have many PCI card drivers (NICs, etc) included in
the kernel to make a network install easier.  The "vanilla" boot
floppies don't have the NIC drivers so they would need to be loaded as
a module from another floppy.
