Maybe XFree's power management?  Look for this in /etc/X11/XF86Config-4
(or wherever your X Config file is):

Section "Monitor"
	...
        Option          "DPMS"
EndSection

I noticed I was suddenly getting this when I upgraded to XFree86 v4.
