bizarre problem with 2.4.12

i have posted this problem a week ago and still finding solutions
everyday. i have kernel 2.4.12, Xfree-4.1.0-7 and nvidia-kernel-1541. i have a problem
with X particularly xterm. when i start and exit eterm, it works. but
when i start xterm and exits, either by typing exit or pressing the
close button, it hangs along with the xserver. so what i do is press
ctrl-alt-del but it doesnt shutdown properly because runlevel 6 also
hangs.

it seems that i am the only one having these problems and people who
have responded to me a week ago dont have any problems at all...

i have attached here my XF86Config-4...

any help will be appreciated..
thank you

PS. 2.4.12 is using ext3 plus devfs. i have an nvidia tnt2 m64.
