I am using whatever was downloaded and installed when I followed
   the proceedures from
   http://www.progeny.com/archive/debian/support/conversion.html
(please see the actual text at the bottom)

Please run the command "dpkg --status kernel-image-X.Y.Z", where X.Y.Z
is the version number of your running kernel, and email me the output.
Run "uname --release" to get the version number if you aren't sure
what it is.

Later in the instructions they say to "Re-run the above command
until no more packages are installed". You will note that they
speak in the singular, inferring that they mean only the immediately
   previous command.

This is correct. You should only need to re-run that command until
everything is finished.

I need to know if I can repair the damage this process did to my
pcmcia setup (3Com 589c needs to be recognized at the moment)
or if I have to again (for the third time) reinstall Progeny-Debian
from the CD and start over.

This card should be supported both with the kernel's modules and with
the external modules. Possibly something else is wrong. Can you look
in "/var/log/daemon.log" and send me any lines that mention pcmcia?
