framebuffer bootup question

Hello,

I recently got a 3dfx Voodoo3 card and thus enabled framebuffer support
in the kernel. I would like to have my Debian system come up in
1024x764 mode with maximum vertical sync frequency, so according to
Documentation/fb/modedb.txt in the Linux source I appended the following
to my kernel command line

	video=tdfx:1024x768

Unfortunatelly, I get a vertical sync of 60Hz, which is extremely hard
on my eyes. My monitor is able to sync at 100Hz at this resolution, and
I would like to have this refresh rate.

According to /usr/share/doc/fbset/FAQ.gz I should be able to specify all
timing parameters myself, like this:

	append="video=XXXXXX:xres:1024,yres:768,pixclock:12699,left:176,right:16,upper:28,lower:1,hslen:96,vslen:3,sync:3,depth:8"

where XXXXXX would be tdfx in my case. Unfortunatelly this doesn't
work, it comes up with the default console of 80x30.

I also tried to run fbset at bootup, but this only changes the first VT
all others remain at 60Hz.

Also, is there a way to get rid of the white area next to the penguin?

TIA,
Viktor
