For example look /var/mail . There should be messages for bob or cat
in a file named after them.
Or where your exim logs are(usually var/log/exim/)
Send a test message for bob example, and check from
logs what happened to it. Did any errors came. where
it went etc. Use some editor or grep/tail commands
for logs. Just ask if you're not sure how to use them.

You can also use exim monitor if it is installed.
