If there is really only 20 MB on the HD, you can install only minimal system, no network support... I am not sure of the GUI there would have to be a few very light window managers out there...
My guess is that you have no system on that laptop so the computer is looking for something to boot from... try putting debian boot floppy in, or CD and see what happens....
WordProcessors... Without upgrading hard drive to allow for GUI to run, you would be limited to command-line interface, so you would be talking of text editor rather than wordprocessor (WordPerfect installer takes 20MB I think, StarOffice takes even more... and fo AbiWord you would need a graphical desktop...
I am not aware of wordprocessor as such in command-line interface... vim, vi, emacs are all referred to as text editors
Debian will work with a few tradeoffs... I suggest upgrading a hard drive... unless you don't need all the different fonts, etc...
