kppp in KDE is recommended by many.
I use WindowMaker. The wmppp app has a checkbox to connect/disconnect,
and a green/red/yellow status light to indicate network status, as well
as traffic and speed indicators. It sits on the WindowMaker Dock or
Clip. I set this up for my parents' use.

Screenshots of WindowMaker desktop (wmifs, the 'ETH-0' tile) is
similar to wmppp. I have a separate box that handles dialup
