cdrom not valid block device?

Thanks for the help in setting up /etc/fstab. I think I've gotten a
little farther along. I added a line to fstab as follows:

  /dev/cdrom /cd iso9660 ro,user,noauto,unhide

Now when I type

  mount /cd

I get the following message:

mount: /dev/cdrom is not a valid block device

I wonder if my cdrom drive is not compatible? I think what I have is
just a standard drive, IDE.
