Yes, this is a PITA. I finally got it working on a fresh install after some
tinkering. There was recently a post about good SECRET Debian software, and
"msttcorefonts" or something like that was mentioned. Low and behold it's
Microsoft TrueType fonts...which you'll need.

Anyway, a similar question was just posted to Debian Planet
(http://www.debianplanet.org). I repost my posting here...

You can have AA in KDE. Here's what I did (I use unstable)...

   1. apt-get install msttcorefonts I think that is the package name. Anyway, it will get a whole bunch of MS fonts that are FREE.
   2. At this point, edit your /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 file and add the "TrueType" directory to the fontlist.
   3. Then, edit your /etx/X11/XftConfig and add "TrueType" to there as well.
   4. Now, restart your Xserver to activate the changes. You now have lots of AA fonts available!
   5. Log into KDE and go to your control panel and go to Fonts under "Look and Feel". Now, change all references of Helvetica to Verdana. Also,
change Courier to "Courier New". You can also verify your AA fonts loaded properly as they are available when you bring up the font dialog. Oh yeah,
I've found Verdana to be the best substitute for Helvetica after much playing around (cough...don't waste time trying others...cough).
   6. Enjoy your AA KDE desktop:)

PS: This is all from memory as I don't have access to my Debian box.

HTH,
Scott
