Note that the 2.4.x kernels are still a "work in progress" - it is
possible that you tried an earlier 2.4 kernel that had this problem,
but I certainly haven't seen it.

That being said I wouldn't recommend a 2.4.x kernel for a production
system right now. For a personal workstation it's probably fine.
