potato - can't save to floppy, no matter what I try

   Happens now and then - cannot write to floppy. Then
I try linuxconf (both - in X, in console mode), toggle
the "read only" (in "File Systems") - nothing happens.
Then I go: "chmod 777 /dev/fd0 - nothing happens. All
the above as "root". This happens ever so often,
sometimes I just try to fix it with "linuxconf" and it
works, sometimes. I need to be able to write to
floppy!
