apt-get and aptitude, among others.

You should ;-)

Install the things you need over time.  You'll learn which packages you
want, there are tools to find what you're looking for (apt-cache search,
the package search utility at the Debian website).  Ask on list if
you're stuck trying to find a particular package or resolve some odd
issue.

In general though, it's a good idea to know what you have (dpkg
--show-selections), what you want, and what you don't want.
